Comprehensive Audiologic Evaluations

A comprehensive audiologic evaluation includes both pure tone hearing assessment at various frequencies, and speech discrimination testing which assesses the patient’s ability to understand spoken language. The test is conducted in a sound-controlled booth.

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)

Otoacoustic emissions are sounds recorded in the ear canal that reflect outer hair cell movement in the cochlea (organ of hearing). OAEs permit early detection of inner ear abnormalities.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a test used to aid in the identification of middle ear disorders. Tympanometry measures middle ear pressure and eardrum mobility.

Acoustic Reflex Testing

The acoustic reflex is an involuntary muscle contraction that occurs in the middle ear in response to loud stimuli. Identifying the level at which this protective muscle contraction occurs can be helpful in the diagnosis of hearing loss and other auditory pathway disorders.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

The Auditory Brainstem Response is an objective test that can be used to estimate hearing sensitivity and to identify neurological abnormalities of the auditory nerve and the auditory pathway.

Auditory Processing Evaluations

An auditory processing disorder (APD) involves abnormal sound processing. In general, patients with APD are able to detect sounds at normal levels but they are not able to process these sounds correctly. APD can be identified through special auditory tests during an auditory processing evaluation.

Auditory Rehabilitative Evaluation

Current hearing aid users may be in need of an auditory rehabilitative evaluation which assesses the patient’s personal performance with their current listening device(s). This evaluation is conducted in a sound-controlled setting and involves various speech perception tests. Testing is performed in quiet environments as well as noisy ones to simulate real life environments and help assess functional benefit.
