I am Seyma Yalcinkaya, a JHBI Audiology Extern for the 2023-2024 year. After earning an undergraduate degree in Audiology from Istanbul Medipol University in Turkey and pursuing a Doctorate of Audiology at Gallaudet University, I have gained clinical experiences through internships in various clinics, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers. Growing up in Turkey and immersing myself in its vibrant culture has shaped my identity, but my journey of self-discovery has led me to embrace diversity beyond borders. I am fluent in American Sign Language and English, enabling me to connect deeply with individuals from different cultures and languages. I am passionate about creating a more inclusive environment as a future audiologist, particularly for underrepresented minorities, women, and socioeconomically underprivileged individuals.
In addition to providing culturally responsive care, I have a strong interest in audiology research. I conducted successful research projects on the occlusion effect and clinical tests of vestibular function, presenting my findings at prestigious conferences such as American Academy of Audiology. I am also involved in an independent project to develop a free mobile application for tinnitus sound therapy. At JHBI, I have been gaining invaluable experiences in audiology through diagnostic assessments and treatment procedures for patients with hearing and balance disorders. I feel fortunate to be part of the exceptional team at JHBI, working closely with patients throughout their healthcare journey.
Outside of work, I enjoy exploring Jacksonville, participating in social events, salsa dancing, and networking. Traveling to different countries allows me to embrace diverse cultures, broaden my perspective, and appreciate human diversity. I am excited for the upcoming year and the surprises it holds.
