What is Roger Technology?

Understanding speech can be difficult for anyone when the person speaking is at a distance or when in background noise, but this becomes even more difficult when the listener has hearing loss.  Hearing aids help patients hear what they are missing naturally due to their hearing loss but they can only process the signal they receive and there are some listening situations that can overwhelm even well-fit, state-of-the-art devices. Such environments are busy restaurants, family gatherings, meetings, and community events. These situations can be especially demanding because distance and background noise reduce the speech signal compared to the noise before it reaches the hearing aids.

Using a remote microphone is a technology that was developed to support listening in these situations by transmitting the speaker’s voice directly to the listener’s hearing aids. Leading hearing aid manufacturer, Phonak, has their Roger technology designed to pair specifically with their hearing aids to help patients have conversations in difficult environments, by increasing the signal-to-nose- ratio Studies conducted show that adding Roger On microphone significantly improved speech understanding compared to hearing aids alone and improved a patient’s listening experience.
