This question has come up recently since Apple released their new AirPods Pro 2, advertised to include hearing aid functions. So, what are those functions and how do they compare to traditional hearing aids?
New features included in the AirPods Pro 2 are better active noise cancellation and reduction, Live listen, Conversation Boost, and an at-home hearing test through the devices and your phone.
Active Noise Cancellation: removes up to 2x more background noise
Live Listen: Uses the iPhone as a microphone to help reduce background noise and amplify sound.
Conversation Boost: brings focus and clarity to the voices directly in front of you
Although these features may be helpful there is still limited customization available with these features and limited output from the devices compared to the ability of a hearing aid. Apple specifically notes throughout advertisement of the devices that these features are meant for individuals with mild-moderate hearing loss. Most of these features are standard in most traditional hearing aids as well as streaming capabilities.
Pros of the AirPods Pro 2
- Cheaper than hearing aids
- Streaming capability
Cons of AirPods Pro 2
- Limited Battery life
- Doesn’t fit all ears
- Limited customization
Airpods are expected to have a battery life of ~6 hours a day whereas hearing aids are meant to be worn all waking hours and typically have a battery life of 20+ hours a day. Hearing aids have much more room for customization when it comes to the physical fit of the ear and range of hearing losses to ensure a comfortable fit for each individual.
Hearing aids are medical devices made to fit all kinds of hearing losses. They are specifically fit and programmed by professionals to help meet each individual’s unique hearing needs.
Airpods can provide some assistance in difficult listening environments for those with mild to moderate hearing loss and could be a good start for someone interested in experimenting with amplification for the first time but overall, they cannot provide the same level of customization as traditional hearing aids can.
